It's unfortunate, but true - customer service is the punch line of a whole lotta jokes.  If you're taking the time to read this post, you are definitely not part of the reason customer service has still got such a bad rap, but you are definitely the recipient of all the baggage and poor expectations customer have by the time they make it to you wherever your link is in the customer service chain.
 
So what are you to do about it?  First, laugh.  That's why pie charts like those above (created by the very clever team of New Creations at truthfacts.com) exist.  Second, address those negative preconceptions head on.  If it fits the culture of your company, hit them back with humor.  "I'm going to ask you to hold right now so that I can [insert reason], but unlike other companies, when I say 'please' and 'brief,' I really do mean it.  May I please place you on a brief hold?"  The smile you receive in response will make the excellent customer service you deliver go a lot further.
